Privacy, for parents and guardians

Version parent-notice-2026-11-v3 · Dated October 26, 2026

Heads up: Draft for review

Draft for the closed alpha. Version parent-notice-2026-11-v3. Sixly hasn't approved it yet, so nobody should rely on it. Notes marked “For review” are for Sixly and its lawyer and come out before it's approved.

What Sixly collects about you and your student, what you see, what you decide, and how to delete it. The full privacy notice has more detail.

You hold the account

For a student under 18, you are the account holder. You agree to the terms, verify your email and your mobile number, and decide what Sixly may do for your student. Your student agrees to short student rules. Nothing is charged during the alpha.

What Sixly collects

About you

  • Your name and email address.
  • Your mobile number, to confirm it's you and to give one free trial per family. Never used for marketing.
  • The choices you make for your student, with the date and the version of the words you saw.

About your student

  • Name, email, age group, the month they turn 18 and their state. Not their birth month or year, and not their phone number.
  • Their practice: what they write on boards (erased strokes kept hidden), typed steps, readings of their handwriting, the checker's results, hints shown, answers and practice time.
  • Reports they send with Report a problem.

What you see

Your student is told this when they join, in these words:

What your parent can see

  • The questions you practice and how they went
  • The steps the checker caught, with a replay of your board
  • When and how long you practice, and the sessions left on your plan
  • Your goals and settings, and your answer about research use, which they can turn off

What your parent never sees

  • The tutor's hints to you
  • What you type to the tutor

These lists are for students 13 to 17, so a teen has a private place to ask for help. For a child under 13 you can see everything Sixly collects from them.

What you decide

  • Whether your student may use Sixly. They can't practice until you allow the account, and you can withdraw permission any time, which pauses their practice.
  • AI hints. Sixly's AI (Claude, from Anthropic) explains typed steps only with your yes. Without it your student still gets Sixly's own written hints.
  • Talking with the tutor. With your yes (and AI hints on), your student can hold a button and ask out loud. Microsoft's Azure speech service turns the recording into words; Sixly never stores the recording or the words, and your student's words show only as a caption on their screen, never sent to the AI. The tutor answers out loud in a voice from ElevenLabs, which only ever gets the tutor's words. Without it your student taps for hints, and the device can read them aloud.
  • Handwriting reading. Mathpix reads handwriting only with your yes, and doesn't save the writing. It isn't available yet for students in New York, because a New York law needs a signed agreement with Mathpix first, and it stays off while your student uses Sixly from New York. Without it your student types steps, and Sixly checks them.
  • Research use is your student's own choice. If they're 13 to 17, it stays off unless they say yes. You can turn it off; you can't turn it on for them.
  • Sign-in codes by text, once Sixly offers it. Your verified phone covers your student, so they don't need one. You may allow a student 13 to 17 to get sign-in codes on their own phone; they then decide on their own screen, which names Twilio, the company that sends the texts. Turning it off deletes the number.

Change any of these in Controls on the parent view. Each change is recorded with its date.

Messages

Sixly emails you about your account: sign-in codes, your student's invite and setup, and notices such as your student turning 18. Sixly sends no marketing and no reminders during the alpha, and emails your student only the invite they asked for.

Seeing, getting and deleting your student's data

  • “Review work” on the parent view shows your student's questions, the steps the checker caught and their practice sessions.
  • “Delete practice work” removes their boards, readings, checks, answers and sessions. This can't be undone.
  • “Close account” deletes everything and ends the link.
  • For a copy of your student's data, email privacy@sixly.ai from your account's email address. We send it within 30 days.

New York and Vermont

  • New York: for students under 18, Sixly uses data only for what's needed to provide Sixly unless your student says yes to more, and handwriting reading waits for the Mathpix agreement.
  • Vermont: research use isn't available for students under 18, and the app tells your student on every page that you can see their practice.

Children under 13

A child under 13 joins only after you give verified consent: you sign the consent form in the app, sign the printed form by hand, and send a photo of it, which Sixly checks automatically. Before any material change for your child, Sixly asks again. Read the children's privacy notice first. It lists what Sixly collects from a child, who receives it, how long it's kept, and your rights. This path isn't open yet.

For review: Parent view and controls are W6's build (plan 3.7); button names here follow it. AI hints for minors stay off until the conditions in plan 6.4 are met (SIXLY_MINOR_AI).
